A persuasive essay is one where you make a solid argument for one side of a position or debatable topic. Your goal is to convince the reader that your side is the best one or that your opinion is the best one.

The following criteria will enable you to create an effective persuasive argument:

As you write your persuasive essay remember that there are many ways in which you can support your argument.

  1. The first way you can support your argument is with facts. Facts that are convincing and powerful will draw your reader toward your side of the argument. You can find facts from observation or reading or from your personal experience. Remember that a “truth” is different from a “fact”. A “truth” is something that many people believe but it is not proven unlike a fact.
  2. The second thing you can use is a statistic. Statistics from reputable sources which are properly cited make for excellent support.
  3. You can include a quote from an expert that supports your position too. This is often invaluable to making your argument a sound argument for the reader.
  4. Finally you can include an example to support your argument. Examples will help to solidify your ideas and will enhance your meaning. They also act as proof of your side or position in the argument.
